Straechav's Sketches.

There you go. A new painting.

This time I am trying some things slightly out of my comfort zone. Not only it’s a full figure pose, but four figures. Additionally, a suggestion of a background. Very much out of my usual area of expertise. There’s still things here that I don’t like, at all, but I should stop fiddling with it and let it go.

There’s always the next time.

Not sure what I’ll do next time. Need to think up some suitably epic, or disturbing, idea. Maybe something less ambitious? No crazy perspectives and tilted viewpoints, for example.

Straechav's Sketches.

So, I’m not going to bother to post the actual artwork here anymore. Too much work. Maybe if it was automated on my blog, I’d bother. But right now it’s too much work for me. I’m lazy, I know.

But, I will still notify people of new pieces of artwork here, so you won’t miss anything. Aside from sketches, of which I won’t bother to remark on. I’ll just post mentions whenever I finish a new artwork.

That said, I’ve done FOUR new pieces since the last time I posted anything here.

In chronological order:

* Mortality (the first piece I managed to finish after the stroke, while still half blind.)
* Contemplating Future (Artsy fartsy black and whiteness.)
* Ignus (My new masterpiece?)
* Melt (Very… interesting piece.)

That’s all! I’ll try to post here faster than this. Four finished artworks is quite the pace for me. But, hey, I’m bored sitting home and doing jack shit.

So I keep painting.

Also, I’m trying to use only Photoshop — and additionally I am trying to improve myself as a painter. I think I made a big leap during this year (Regurgitate & Ignus, anyone?), but I figure I want to get even better.

I call this “Bads” because I listened to Oyaarss album “bads” on repeat while painting it. This is also my first painting where I used Zbrush to get me a base scketch. Basically I created an ugly model that roughly had the right volumes and then added light where needed.

I didn’t, however, go entirely with this “base sketch”. I took some fairly obvious liberties with the lights and shadows, purely for stylistic reasons and such. But it definitely gives me hope that Zbrush might become part of my regular workflow.

Even if in this case it slowed down my progress to twice the usual speed. I took far too long to fiddle with the “base sketch” and lights, whereas I would have normally just started painting and “go for it”.

I took a short break from studying ZBrush and 3D art, and instead painted a quick’ish new painting. It’s basically all very old style stuff from me. I couldn’t be bothered to go to the “hyperdetail” (for me, that is) level. It takes way too long to do for what I felt like. So unlike the last three paintings, I didn’t even bother to do anything but indulge myself.

Still, I like how it turned out. I was thinking “this is shit” and throwing the whole piece away about half an hour before finishing it. So the at the last moment, it turned out well enough. Still, it took me way too long. Eight hours of work, including all the breaks and retries as I tried to massage the painting in to something I’d like.

But, at least it occupied me for a while.

Oh, and it’s done in half and half in Art Rage and Photoshop.

The picture isn’t of the highest quality because I am hosting it on Imgur (because of hotlinking idiots) which edits the JPG, so there’s few artifacts on the image. Try to ignore them, if you don’t mind.

That said, due to a very nice commenter on Reddit this post will continue quite a long way further. I’m going to now explain how I did this image.

Regurgitate

“Regurgitate“, by Jyri Straechav. 2012. All rights reserved.

You can buy this as a poster on my society6 page

I painted it almost completely in Art Rage 2, but I did some minor stuff in Photoshop. I laid down the composition on photoshop, and then used ridiculous amount of pencil tool in Art Rage to make it in to a painting. Some oil paint tool was used too for the overall colors, along with palette knife. I did some brushwork in photoshop, which does show in the full sized piece if you examine it closely. Mostly because the “canvas” texture disappears where I’ve painted on photoshop.

But I was a bit tired of the painting by that time and I couldn’t couldn’t be arsed to work in Art Rage anymore. Photoshop is still about five times faster tool when you just want to change little things, even if the results aren’t quite so nice.

And yes, I know this is a “regurgitation” of my older paintings. I don’t care, I do this for fun.

I’m alive, and actually productive. A quick little piece. It’s all ArtRage, with minor adjustments in Photoshop. It’s all very too typical for me, but it was just something little to relax with.

Four things.

  1. Might be my best piece so far.
  2. He looks like Spock. It wasn’t intentional.
  3. This is the biggest version of the picture you’ll find anywhere. 1920 x 1295 plus some odd pixels. It works as a wallpaper just like it is – WITHOUT SCALINGin both 1920 x 1200 resolution, and 1920 x 1080 resolution. The rest, you know how to scale pictures in Photoshop, right? If not, download xnview (it’s free!) and your’re good to go.
  4. While sketching, if in doubt, add tentacle.

Here it is:

As common sense says: don't modify, distribute, and especially don't modify and distribute.

My new painting. I don’t have much to talk about it, however. Except that I am tired of it, and I’m tired of hands. It’s done, whether you agree with me or not. That was one exhausting piece of work. I don’t generally like doing hands, and doing this many… yeah. So, all done in Art Rage once again. Somehow I don’t see them using my art in their official showcases. Don’t seem like it’d appeal to the hobbyist market.

Anyhow, here you go. Another in the series of “what the fuck is wrong with you, man?!” paintings.

Click for the large version, a little bigger than I post anywhere else.
